DKWAYWO: A Different Diary. Caution this might be triggering. Sexual assault. [1]

I was planning on doing a diary on some of the quilting and embroidery projects I am working on, but on Thursday one of my nieces called me. A friend of hers daughter had been raped and murdered a couple of days earlier, her body thrown in a dumpster. The girl was 15; her assailant was 29. He was on probation for raping a 14 year just two months earlier. He plead guilty to that, but he didn’t kill her.

My niece, knowing I do sewing asked if I could help make ribbons for a memorial service. Of course I said yes. There is no name on these ribbons, they will be put on by someone else, and even though the crime is in the paper, I won’t use the victim’s name here.

I didn’t know the color of ribbon for sexual assault was teal. I do now.

Yesterday I spent the day making ribbons. I found, on one of my sewing machines, a stitch that was a heart, so I used that to sew the two sides together. I hadn’t sewed that many hours straight in a long time. The parents love the heart.

The police have blamed everyone but themselves and the court system. Why was this person still just wandering around looking for victims? Isn’t rape with a 15 year age difference something someone goes to jail for?

So that is what I was working on. I wish I could do a more cheerful diary, but I can’t. I find it so difficult that rape can be taken so casually. The police involved would say that it isn’t. But the facts show something else. A 29 year old man agrees he raped a 14 year old girl. The result: Go forth and try not to do it again. That’s it.

I’m angry, but all I can do is sew.

The ribbons I’ve been making. Not all of them are right side up, but that doesn’t matter.
