The GOP Mission Impossible [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-05-15 Good morning Mr. Comer, the man you are looking at... Fox News host Maria Bartiromo found herself in unfamiliar territory Sunday, journalism-land. A week ago, House Oversight Chairman James Comer Jr. (R-KY) laid out what sounded like the plot for Mission Impossible, accusing Hunter and Joe Biden of money laundering funds to family members with payments from China and Romania. Mixed in was a Serbian running for Secretary General of the United Nations and former security adviser to the then Vice President Joe Biden, Colin Kahl [light the fuse]. Rep. Comer’s chief witness seems to be missing. He told Bartiromo in response to her questions about the whereabouts of the witness, “Well, unfortunately, we can’t track down the informant. We’re hopeful that the informant is still there. The whistleblower knows the informant. The whistleblower is very credible,” answered Comer (the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your action). With 787.5 million visions dancing in her head, Bartiromo followed up with a question that did not involve a Kraken or a dead Venezuelan dictator. “Hold on a second, Congressman,” Bartiromo said. “Did you just say that the whistleblower or the informant is now missing?” Roiled by the specter of real journalism on Fox, Comer responded, “…Remember, these informants are kind of in the spy business, so they don’t make a habit of being seen a lot or being high profile or anything like that.” Comer came just short of saying the dog ate my homework. The GOP is so anxious to find a scandal that would approximate the sedition, crimes, impeachments, indictments, and familial payments to the Trump family from the Saudis that anything will do. Republicans seemed baffled at others’ decency. Viewing life as a zero-sum game has the Republicans defending the forced pregnancy of a 10-year-old, making allowances for children in cages, and making us target practice for every maladjusted white supremacist, xenophobe, and anti-Semite. Diddling around with the debt ceiling is nothing new for a party willing to do anything to prove that a Democrat is not worthy of power. The last time the GOP led us into the rake factory was during the Obama administration. In 2011 Standard and Poor’s downgraded the U.S. government’s credit rating from AAA to AA+. Alibiing for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans because no Republican of note would stop Donald Trump’s disastrous Covid policy; if not judged in this world, it should be judged in another. GOP pundits told us the expiration of Title 42, which ostensibly was put in place as a pseudo-health quarantine, would overwhelm us with alien invaders. Still, so far, the Biden administration is handling the change. The GOP hierarchy is baffled by the lack of zombie-like attackers or hordes of immigrants crossing the border as they had predicted. President Biden, in a stroke of Dark Brandon reverse psychology, told us to expect ‘chaos.’ Mr. Biden circumvented the right-wing media’s over-the-top rating-grabbing fear-mongering. The use of night vision video of ghost-like figures crossing the border in the dead of night was replaced by orderly legal crossings and vacant help centers. President Biden has learned from the Afghanistan withdrawal no matter the result; first impressions are lasting. It took his former boss, President Obama, years to put the botched website in the rearview mirror at the beginning of the Affordable Care Act. So being truthful and predicting a little chaos unnerved the GOP. Peace and order at the border have GOP governors ordering buses feverishly to send migrants north; dem’ Yankees will suffer (this idea will self-destruct in five seconds).
