Trump is out of office, but DeJoy still running the Postal Service to the ground. That changes now [1]

DeJoy is the first postmaster general in nearly two decades who has not been a career postal employee. He owned a logistics business that was a longtime contractor with the Postal Service, and has financial stakes with many of Postal Service’s competitors.

That alone creates a major conflict of interest, and we have seen this played out in the past three years of his tenure.

DeJoy’s dangerous 10-year privatization plan for the Postal Service remains a real threat to workers, consumers, and our entire postal system. Mail prices have gone up under DeJoy, and the mail has slowed down. Now some letter carriers might see their pay slashed and their livelihoods taken away.

DeJoy’s broader Postal Service privatization plan will inevitably raise prices even more, crushing consumers who rely on the mail to send packages to loved ones and small businesses that rely on the Postal Service for the core of their operations. It will also adversely impact rural and Indigenous communities the most—the Postal Service is a lifeline for so many communities.

And yet, Biden became president and DeJoy was allowed to stay on as Postmaster General. But Biden has made progress since becoming president. In November 2021, he refused to renominate one DeJoy ally, Ron Bloom, whose term had expired. This was after Daily Kos and allies brought to light the fact that Bloom was engaged in financial dealings with DeJoy.

Two of Biden's picks—Daniel Tangherlini and Derek Kan—were confirmed by the Senate in May 2022, which some speculated at the time could be the end of DeJoy's career. But clearly, that was not enough and Biden needs to appoint more Postal Service governors.

Right now, two DeJoy allies on the board are on "holdover" years after their terms expired. Biden can nominate two replacements who will stand up to DeJoy’s destructive leadership and advocate strongly for the expansion of postal services.

Biden must make sure the next two nominations to the Postal board of governors are up to the task of firing the postmaster general and understand that the Postal Service has always been, and should remain, a cherished public service.
