The Inoculation Project 5/21/2023: Math and Reading in Mississippi [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-05-21 This project is so close to completion! I know it’ll be done before next week. In this Gulf Coast Mississippi town near Biloxi, Mrs. Reiling needs some math activities for her second-grade students. PROJECT #1 Project: Math Mastery Matters Resources: Help me give my students interactive and engaging mathematical centers to meet their individual needs. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; half of students from low‑income households. Location: Magnolia Park Elementary School, Ocean Springs, Mississippi Total: $171.81 Still Needed: $ 94.16 Completed, thanks! Please consider project #2 below. Project description by Mrs. Reiling: My students come to school every day eager to learn! They each have their own learning need and style at various academic levels. Help me give my students math centers that will help support their needs. The addition and subtraction games and regrouping manipulatives will help them to build mastery of foundational mathematical concepts. Using the math centers during small groups with their teacher or when using centers in small groups with their peers, my students love the hands-on centers, which help keep them engaged and focused. These centers will be a fun and encouraging asset to their learning. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Usually, there’s at least some vendor video of the games being requested, but not today. But several are math games using special dominoes, so instead, here’s a fun “Women in STEM” domino art project from domino artist Lily Hevesh (@Hevesh5). You can see her two-part, extremely detailed video about the making of this project here and here. x x YouTube Video We have a new project this week: this elementary school teacher in western Mississippi needs more books in her classroom! PROJECT #2 Project: Good Books Make Great Readers Resources: Help me give my students more books to add to our classroom collection! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Pearman Elementary School, Cleveland, Mississippi Total: $412.21 Still Needed: $ 412.21 $327.21 Project description by Ms. Jones: This project mostly includes books that my students enjoy reading and taking Accelerated Reading tests on. They requested more Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House books so I included those as bundles. The singular books will be new reads that I think my students will enjoy. Giving students books that they are interested in promotes them to read more, ultimately turning them into great readers! I also included an encyclopedia and two books of world records. I enjoyed reading the world record books in elementary school, so I know my students will too!! DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! One of the requested book sets has been made into a Netflix series. x x YouTube Video This is a “book trailer” for another fun set. x x YouTube Video Our longer-term project from last week was completed, and we helped a lot! Project #2, All Hands on Deck for Reading: Mrs. Parks teaches early grades in an Alaskan village of about 400 people, on the Bering Sea. She needed hands-on phonics materials to help her students learn to read. She writes: Thank you for your generosity and support of my class! By your giving my students will have an opportunity to have a lot of different reading resources to help boost their skills. Young learners need hands on exercises, and these resources will be enjoyed for years to come! Thank you again for your selfless giving! We also have a note from two weeks ago, from the project Classroom Manipulatives: Ms. Spearman wanted her Oklahoma early-grades students to have some materials to help with science and math. She writes: The moral support and financial contributions made by each of you to help fund my Classroom Manipulatives Project is appreciated more than you may realize. It is such a blessing to know others are so willing to help supply educators with materials that will enhance learning for students through active play. DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1036! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
