The Capitalism Hammer is Hitting me [1]

Yeah, life in USA 2023 is pretty grim for those of us in the “transitioning from middle-class to poor” state of affairs. I’ll share my tale of woe and then request direct help – I kind of have nowhere else to turn… no rich family or friends, on my own in atomized society – all individuals, no groups for mutual support.

I am burnt out. Completely. I have 4 children and a sick wife who is not working and not on any benefits other than Medicare (like all our family as we currently qualify). I’ve been a teacher/librarian at my same position in a for-profit school with a good salary for the past 13 years but no raises and rising expenses as I travel through life. I recently downsized my home (as expenses kept climbing) and sold it via Orchard which pays cash up-front when you secure a new home, I did, then promises the extra when the original home sells; no extra ever happened, bad market conditions in summer, 2022). I have a new house with lesser mortgage & bills but even that has now become overwhelming.

As no additional funds happened from the sale of my home, I could no longer pay my credit card bills, 18K hanging over my head. I’ve recently had to make the choice: can I pay for my utilities & food/gas or pay the monthly mortgage, not enough money for both. I’m arriving at 2 months behind (just under $2K/month). Both of my children who have just finished collegiate studies have not secured high-paying jobs, thus they (& me) cannot make student loan payments - $5K/month combined – into default as the 90 day deadline passed, thus credit score destroyed.

The final straw? Just lost car – hit a big pothole & broke front axle so car cannot drive, AAA couldn’t get it on a Sunday night (luckily, accident happened near my home, adjacent neighborhood so I could walk home) BUT the car was not left where it was (safely off the street on side of road), the local police had it towed away! I am now being extorted $400 for this entirely unnecessary tow/impound!!! + the now 2 day $40/day storage fee and I don’t have the money to get it until my next payday!!! (At end of month). I can take the bus to my work & have been doing so – hanging by a thread…

I kind of feel like George Bailey in “It’s a wonderful life” – I am at the end of my rope. I really am just continuing to stagger along until it all collapses and/or, by good grace, I manage to get out of this – I can write at least (hence this contribution to KOS) and I am seeking other benefits to help not be forced out of my home – I have one more child who just graduated (HS done but no college possible because it has just left affordability) and one more who finished sophomore year, 2 to go

There are two ways you (dear KOS fans & idol rich folks who stumble across this), you can Zelle me funds to my phone (send email & I’ll send the #) or direct transfer to my NFCU checking account: (send email & I’ll send the #s) – (both methods wind up in same place; also skips the middle-man of Go Fund Me campaigns…) I need about 5K by Friday so I can get/fix my car & catch up on mortgage for a little breathing room while I apply for all other possible government aid (still, that talks time too!).

I’ll make the following deal too – if you can & do help, send me an email (cololibdude@gmail.com) so I can create a list of all who helped me & my family, then pay you back triple if I win the lottery or enjoy some other sort of fiscal bonanza that allows all debts to be swept away!
