Wear orange to honor victims of gun violence [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-02 Real quick, please wear orange today, Friday, June 2nd, and any time this weekend to honor victims of gun violence. Why orange? On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Wear Orange is now observed every June. Thousands of people wear the color orange to honor Hadiya and the more than 43,000 Americans are killed with guns and approximately 76,000 more are shot and wounded every year. When enough of us do it, people will notice and ask why. They’ll see fellow Americans in favor of well regulated gun rights. This gives me the chance to wear Tiger mascot school gear from the elementary school my kids attended. I would hesitate to wear elementary school gear to honor shooting victims, but with so many kids exposed to gun violence, it is appropriate. Maybe others here can don their DK gear. Not that there is violence at headquarters, but because it’s orange solidarity with those who have been hurt by gun violence. Whatever you wear, I hope there’s orange in it this weekend. Stop the madness. Regulate guns.
