Kitchen Table Kibitzing June 4, 2023 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-04 Picnic Season Part of my N Y Times subscription includes a feature called “The Morning”. Today it was called The Sun is Calling and after some research I think I can share it. The Sun is Calling. Wow that worked; ever learning. The story is about preparing for picnic season. Anyway, it made me think about picnics. Growing up in Wisconsin, outdoor family picnics were rare because of mosquitos and the inevitable rain. There were plenty of festivals that included picnics, but crowds dissipated the clouds of mosquitos to less than 10 per person which was tolerable, plus DDT had just been invented and began to be sprayed widely in parks and public venues. Two of my most memorable picnics took place next to rivers, one during a Colorado boating experience, where it was comfortable on the river, but over 100º where we stopped for lunch. It was good, but we sought even the smallest possible shade, which was rare. The other was a rafting trip in Peru down the Urubamba river. Exciting (and wet). When we stopped along the river we were greeted by an advance crew who had set up an elegant picnic along the shore. Marge used to lead trips like this. Our last picnic was several years ago, in critical fire season, but prior to covid. HOA rules forbid BBQ grills near the condos, and, being from Wisconsin, of course we were jonesing for bratwurst. We headed for Spring Lake and found a grill at the center of a 200 square concrete area, where we felt fire-safe. Brats and potato salad; it was wonderful….except for the noise. You think a murder of crows would be loud? How about a dozen murders in unison; some sort of crow convention. I googled, but I knew the answer: What is the nation's Favourite picnic item?
