Part 2 of this diary will be posted on Sunday, June 11th between 6:30-8:30 pm ET. Drop by, if you can. Thanks. You Cannot Evade the Law Forever When in Prison, At Least Obey the Rules For much of his life, Donald Trump has always behaved in a manner that would have landed most normal people in serious trouble, probably even in jail. That he has avoided punishment for his many crimes over the decades speaks volumes about our legal system. Money can often buy you good enough legal representation to avoid the consequences of your illegalities. Until now. Trump’s indictment and next Tuesday's arraignment in a Miami, Florida court of law will set into motion the wheels of justice, which will narrowly address the specific criminal charges against him. In the court of public opinion, however, Trump is viewed through a different lens. The list of his crimes is rather long, be they of a deliberate and willful nature or unintentional. Few are undecided about him; his uncouth, outrageous, and loutish behavior over the decades certainly hasn’t gained him any new sympathizers or supporters. In that court, he stands guilty and is also on trial for the following actions. For all the women he has insulted, harassed, humiliated, and even raped over the years. For all the workers that he screwed while they were working on one of his many construction projects. For all the numerous lies he told about political opponents, elections, and the democratic process since first declaring his candidacy in 2015. For all the immigrants he denigrated whose only fault was that they sought a better economic life for their families in this country. For simply being a low-brow jerk, a lousy human being, a professional cheat, and an accomplished liar who is the embodiment of “The Ugly American.” For practicing discriminatory housing policies in apartment buildings owned by him and his father in the New York area. For being an utter embarrassment representing this country in his dealings with foreign leaders. For directly and indirectly insulting all minorities and disabled people through his actions. For appealing to the worst instincts of many Americans, including racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, and general hatred of foreigners. For being the best friend that white supremacists and white nationalists could possibly hope to have in the White House. For his stunning incompetence in dealing with a serious pandemic and the resulting unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans. For giving the country US Supreme Court justices and lower court judges hell-bent on rolling back hard-fought civil rights and individual liberties. For encouraging, instigating, and inciting the worst insurrection in the history of this country and directly challenging its democratic traditions after losing the 2020 Presidential Election — one that resulted in several deaths on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. For blatant disregard for the rule of law and for completely ignoring a code of ethical conduct befitting the Presidency. For financially enriching himself in ways unbecoming in years past of the leader of this country. For that, and much, much more that he is accused of, Donald Trump looks like he has run out of options. In Jack Smith — the Special Counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 — Trump has finally met someone willing to hold him accountable and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. And more indictments might be coming this summer, pertaining to the January 6th insurrection and interference in the 2020 Georgia election. It is death by a thousand cuts. It’s about time. He May Be a Criminal, But He is Our Criminal! x Trump is indicted. Again. And, predictably, prominent republicans come running to defend him from any hint of accountability. As I understand it, a Grand Jury can indict anyone with a majority vote. So, the task ahead to find 12 jurors in Florida — where presumably the trial will take place — to convict Trump won’t be easy. Even as the evidence collected by Jack Smith is persuasive, anything could happen during Trump’s trial. It could end up as a mistrial; if she remains as the presiding Judge, Trump appointee Aileen Cannon could interfere in ways beneficial to Trump; the jury could be a hung jury unable to agree unanimously on even one charge, etc. Keep that in mind as you take the diary poll.
