[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-13 It is bizarre that Republicans are still so loyal to Trump. Sometimes there comes a point in a scandal that when enough public evidence piles up, a politician’s career is done. Nobody speaks out in his favor, and it’s up to the courts to decide if he goes to prison or if he can try his luck in the private sector. We should have reached this point with Trump many, many times. We knew he cheated on all three of his wives. We knew he was openly racist. We knew he was holding mass rallies in the middle of a pandemic, putting his own life in danger. We knew that he brought a mob to DC that attacked the Capitol. We know he had secret documents at his house because he said that he had secret documents at his house, and he demanded that the FBI return them. See, if you want to think that Trump is innocent in the document’s case, you have to believe that he was lying when he said he had the documents. Yes, I know people might make false confessions, but not one of them is a credible candidate for elected office. I never held a security clearance, so there is no classified stuff at my house. But by golly if the police claimed that they found that stuff in my bathroom, I’m going to shut up, lawyer up, and take a break from politics. They were never this loyal to Romney, McCain, or either Bush. They are loyal to Reagan’s legacy, but that only makes sense because Reagan was popular when he was in office. Trump lost the popular vote twice. Different Republicans are defending Trump for different reasons: 1. Republicans who were involved with the January 6th riot who have not been charged yet know that their fate is linked to Trump. They might hope that he goes down on the documents case, and doesn’t mention their names to the DOJ. Or they might hope Trump bounces back. Beau of the Fifth Column talks about it here. x YouTube Video 2. AFAIK, Ron DeSantis didn’t have anything to do with J6. He is running for President, and he cannot be Trump’s running since they are ostensibly from the same state. His campaign would benefit greatly if Trump dropped out of the race. Until that happens, he has to molly-coddle the MAGAhadeen so they don’t see him as an enemy. 3. Other Republican presidential candidates are vying for that #2 spot, so they don’t want to upset Trump. They are going to pretend to be surprised and outraged for now. 4. Everyone else either believes that Trump is above the law, or doesn’t want to risk consequences for stepping out of line. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger did experience political consequences from denouncing Trump over J6. Maybe they are true patriots who put country over party. Or maybe they made a calculated risk that they expect will pay off in a post-Trump GOP. If it’s the latter, why haven’t more Republicans made that choice? Chris Christie has been critical as well, maybe it might pay off. It will be interesting to see how many Republicans were okay with storming the Capitol but drew the line at keep nuclear secrets at Mar-A-Lago.
