[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-15 Heather Cox Richardson writes today that What would eventually throw a monkey wrench into this economic system [child labor] was the recognition by Republican progressive reformers that children growing up in factories without education would never have the opportunity to become good citizens, whose education was crucial to a democracy. They would never learn to read or write, leaving them at the mercy of employers, and immigrant children caught in this system would never fully integrate into society. A couple of things caught my eye. First was the phrase Republican progressive reformers. Compare this to the current "MAGAdorian" incarnation of that party. The second was their desire that children would be able to get an education and grow up to be good citizens. Today's MAGAdorians have no use for educated citizens, as shown by their current attacks on education, and their desire to replace it with indoctrination and submission. Finally, the desire to NOT have people at the mercy of their employers, and to not have them unable to integrate into society. In short, not to enable the creation of second-class citizens. Contrast that with the evident desire of the MAGAdorians to allow employers to dictate vast swathes of their serf's, excuse me, employee's lives. Read the whole thing.
