Kitchen Table Kibitzing June 18, 2023 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-18 Local History Many people are fascinated by history. Others, sometime entire political parties, are either not interested or wish to change it. Americans move frequently: “Whether they're changing jobs, upsizing their homes or just looking to try on a new neighborhood or dream city, Americans move an average of 11.7 times in their lifetime.”. Moving that often, getting established, and involving themselves in daily life, there might not be time to learn about local history. When we moved to our farm in Sonoma County we looked up when it was built (1877) and some of the history of the builder, but we were building a life and raising a family, so we missed opportunities for greater knowledge. There was a very old woman that lived close by and knew a lot, and told us some stories, but she was eccentric and we doubted her veracity and her memory. Oh, how I wish we had pursued the inquiries. As I’ve mentioned here, we are signed up for tours of the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery, which we have done for years. The tours are guided by volunteers, often in costume, and each has a different theme. A few have been nearby to other historical areas, significant in the founding of the city. The more we learn, the more we want to learn. One thing stands out; the wealthy movers and shakers gave back to their city in ways that seem anathema to today’s billionaires. Writing this, I discovered that our county library has an amazing, I might even say stunning, collection of local history resources. I will be delving into this, as I have become very interested in our history. Are any of y’all history buffs, especially with reference to your local area? Are there any locals that could inform you of stories that could soon disappear? This is an open thread, to discuss history, or more importantly, food.
