Oscar Howe (1915-1983), a Yanktonai Dakota, developed a characteristically individual style which departed from traditional American Indian art. Several of the works displayed feature Howe’s artistic interpretation of traditional Dakota ceremonies. Shown above is Dance of the Heyoka, 1954, casein on paper. Among the Sioux, people who receive their visions from the Thunder People are called Heyoka. The Heyoka are characterized by talking and acting in an opposite manner. In some instances, they function as clowns during ceremonies, and they often act in a contrary fashion. In his book Wwakinyan: Lakota Religion in the Twentieth Century, Stephen Feraca reports: “The heyókha cannot be considered medicine men as such, for they do not cure, counsel, or find lost articles. What they are capable of is undoing the work of medicine men. Shown above is Heyoka Ceremony, 1972, casein on paper.
