Immigration update; join us at The Village, 6/21/23 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-21 Although the cruel and depraved policies of the last administration are gone we haven’t done enough since then to implement humane practices. Granted, a lot of the inhumanity is coming from republicans along the southern border, but that alone doesn't account for the problems that still exist. It’s also taken some time to craft and implement policies that reflect the values of Democrats, and personally I think the Border Patrol doesn’t always hew to the updated guidelines. Clearly though, there’s lots of room for improvement. Recently there has been some good analysis and reporting that I want to share with you about the subject. Let’s start with checking in on the lying liars in the republican party. x Seems like even Republicans recognize the inhumanity of their own actions - to the point that they’re now trying to rewrite history and pretend they weren’t complicit in Trump’s cruel and surgically intentional policy to separate migrant children from their families. pic.twitter.com/MVeplQm14z — Rep. Dan Goldman (@RepDanGoldman) June 14, 2023 This is a really important fact to keep track of because, of course, the lying liars lie about it A LOT! x I'm happy to report that @RepMcCaul is wrong about this principle. Data consistently shows that the vast majority of people released by DHS show up for court—around 4 out of every 5 people will appear for every court hearing. With case management services, that rises to 95%+. https://t.co/zp9JBiFWTr — Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) June 15, 2023 I don’t think the chart needs to be studied in full, however it’s quickly apparent that immigration is a very complicated process. x Joining the chorus here of people praising this chart and new report that @David_J_Bier put out today. People say "Why don't they just get in line and come the right way?" all the time. But the reality is no such line exists for nearly every person in the world. https://t.co/83NXP6RoBD — Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) June 13, 2023 We clearly need a 21st century immigration policy. Would be awesome if it was supported by an understanding of what drives southern hemisphere residents to feel a compelling NEED to leave their home country. Hint, it’s climate change and lawlessness in their home countries. x "You get a wait time of 173 years." This is why people are screaming that the legal immigration system is broken. We last updated the process before the Soviet Union fell. The system is not operating even remotely as intended, because formulas set in 1990 don't work in 2023. https://t.co/Wr3rWIOkf7 pic.twitter.com/tq6du6l881 — Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) June 15, 2023 Yes, family separation is happening under the Biden administration. Families will almost always do better when they stay together. It is cruel for them to separate the adults. x This is the family separation which has gone on for decades and continues every day today; families broken up, with one parent designated as a "single adult" and kept in detention and the other parent + kids designated as a "family unit" and processed differently. https://t.co/Dn9Xb81TEY — Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) June 16, 2023 We also have the absurdity and perhaps criminal actions of Governors Abbott and DeSantis. Americans are willing to help. Coordinate the handoff! x "The migrants dumped in Sacramento over the past week are part of a larger ploy to score political points and win elections, not address the immigration issues facing the nation."https://t.co/Zyo9ZEp9xS — Al Otro Lado (@AlOtroLado_Org) June 15, 2023 x Migrants on the two flights the DeSantis administration sent to Sacramento are speaking out, saying they feel misled, and even lied to. Great reporting by @MackenzieMays. https://t.co/BE1D6aHTTA pic.twitter.com/gQ1aMkF2p0 — Jack Herrera (@jherrerx) June 17, 2023 Immigration is an issue very close to my heart. My own father received his citizenship because of his service in the US Army during WWII. I also worry about the ‘othering’ that occurs because we aren’t able to get our heads out of our asses and formulate a working policy in this country. We are repeating past mistakes of the last century and people are dying, and more will do so needlessly because of this. I implore you not to lose sight of this problem, and to remind yourself about how we reacted 3-6 years ago. Thank you.
