Where is Putin?

The Wall Street Journal reports that his jets have left Moscow. It is entirely possible that he fled the capital, either while the rebels were advancing on the city or after.

Vlad has not been able to get a few minutes of TV time to announce his great victory. His TV appearance during the crisis was so weak, that another one seems hardly advisable.

One thing that we should keep in mind is that everything we hear from Russia is a lie. If telling the truth were easier, the Russians would still lie because it is policy to always lie.

It is highly likely that Putin is spending his time talking to people — powerful people. One question he will be asking the influential is whether his presidency can be saved, and if not for how long?

People noticed that the Russian troops did not step up to protect Moscow.

The war is a liability. Putin is a liability. Throwing Defense Secretary Shoigu under the bus will not help. The bus is too big.

So, how does the Russian elite deal with the situation? Putin’s war is the big problem for Russia, destroying what passes for an economy as well as killing many Russians.

When Putin talks to the influential men in the shadows, very few of them will say, “Just continue doing what you are doing.”

Some of Vlad’s precious time is no doubt being spent looking at real estate in foreign countries.
