Top Comments: Apparently it IS just a number [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-06-28 Running into a former colleague recently, I remarked that people who retire from my agency seem to age backwards afterward. As of today, all South Koreans are doing exactly that. But first, a word from our sponsor! Korean customs around age are a little confusing to outsiders: In South Korea, “international age” refers to the number of years since a person was born, and starts at zero – the same system used in most other countries. But when asked their age in informal settings, most South Koreans will answer with their “Korean age,” which could be one or even two years older than their international age. Under this system, which has its roots in China, babies are considered a year old on the day they’re born, with a year added every January 1. In some circumstances, South Koreans also use their “calendar age” – a mash-up of international age and Korean age – which consider babies as zero years old on the day they’re born and adds a year to their age every January 1. This has created some confusion when dealing with people from other cultures. So, as of today, “international age” is the official system, meaning now all South Koreans are officially one or two years younger. I would like to suggest a modified version of this system, and shave a few years off my own age. If not for all of me, at least for my knees. On to Top Comments!
