Bork'n' the Court [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-07-12 In 1987, Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Bork for Supreme Court justice; Bork’s ultraconservative ‘originalist’ views wrecked his chances. Here’s what Sen. Ted Kennedy said at the time: “Robert Bork's America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens' doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution, writers and artists could be censored at the whim of the Government, and the doors of the Federal courts would be shut on the fingers of millions of citizens for whom the judiciary is—and is often the only—protector of the individual rights that are the heart of our democracy….” Now, 36 years later, the Court has come round to fulfilling Kennedy’s prediction. Here’s one thing Bork did right, as opposed to the three Trump nominees: in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he answered honestly.
