With a fair number of Kossacks in Chicago at Netroots Nation, I thought I’d offer a few random items, including some vacation visuals: 1. Starting with politics, Hubby has an uncle who is in his mid-90s and still has all his marbles. He’s a kind and decent man, but for his entire lifetime as a voter, he has always voted Republican, perhaps more out of habit than anything else. Recently, we learned that he has declared that if Donald Trump is the GOP nominee in 2024, this uncle will not be voting for him. I can’t take any credit for this as I avoid talking politics with Hubby’s family as much as possible for the sake of domestic tranquility. I don’t know if some of his more liberal progeny have been working on him, or if he came to this realization on his own, but I’m particularly glad to see that it is possible for someone so old and set in his ways to be able to change, and for the better. 2. We spent last weekend at the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, Oregon (west of Eugene). (We did this last year, too.) Here are a few souvenirs: The Fighting Instruments of Karma Marching Band: x YouTube Video Dragon procession: x YouTube Video Some additional photos: Penguins on stilts (mostly). Accurately named (Cosmic Crustaship) as it looks like a cross between a spaceship and a crab. A musical artwork with chimes that passersby can ring. The chimes have resonant PVC tubs behind them, hidden by the vertical wood planks. This was cool. A moving multicolor mechanical flower, previously featured last year at Burning Man. (Turns out that Hubby’s cousin’s husband was an engineer who was involved on this project.) 3. On Twitter, I discovered that Finland holds competitions for hobby horse dressage, including a national championship. If NATO finds out about this, do you think they’ll regret letting Finland in? x You have to be kidding me… https://t.co/63qSDYORZH — Rex Chapman🏇🏼 (@RexChapman) July 13, 2023 Comments are below the fold.
