View of the lake with many of us enjoying the absolutely gorgeous day! Mr. Brillig’s sister and her family own a cabin on the lake and invited us up for a visit, before they head back on Wednesday to their Dallas area home. The last time we were able to visit them in Maine was summer 2021, when we were vaccinated but still leery of being indoors with people we didn’t live with and so outdoors and fresh air was one of the ways we could comfortably spend time with extended family. We were unable to visit last year, but when we learned their time up north would include the week after Netroots Nation, we jumped on the opportunity to head up! I’m sure I’ve said here before that my mental Happy Place image is of the Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, looking across the water to Overlook Mountain with Woodstock nestled at the base. It’s my childhood touchstone in a single image. However, I’m not showing that picture tonight because this wonderful extended family land on the shores of the second largest lake in Maine has become my second favorite Happy Place Image. Sunday afternoon before we ::sob:: had to return to Boston and Real Life. We get to relax completely — even K2, who’s always focused on his goals and rarely cracks a smile, laughs as he plays with and mentors his younger cousins, and who with everyone else in the generation before mine enjoyed tubing behind the boat as we enjoyed lake time. There was swimming in the water, kayak and canoe trips along the shore or across the water to the ice cream place on Frye Island, family discussions between the three siblings, late afternoon cocktails and beverages after changing out of swimsuits, s’mores around the evening fire, a family dinner so wonderfully crowded we had to bring outside chairs inside to cram around the table, and much Pokemon Go after the youngest nephews learned the Older Cousins and OMG even Uncle & Auntie Brillig also played! What’s so enjoyable is there’s no pressure to ALL do the same thing together… swimming, canoeing, reading on the dock feet dangling in the water, napping in the cabin and more all occur simultaneously, so that we ALL feel we have what we need to relax and take care of ourselves. I’ve been thinking a lot about the Lake and thought that we could enjoy some songs referencing or about Lakes. I’ll start us off and let’s see what we come up with together! After perusing tonight’s Tops, of course :) Swan Lake — Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — I know, this wasn’t what you thought I’d lead off with. But it literally was the first song that came to mind! And yes, I know it’s not really about a lake. Lake Tahoe — Kate Bush — Such a hauntingly beautiful song. Which is, I know, most of Kate Bush’s repertoire and why I love her music so much. Parked By The Lake — Dean Summerwind — It’s a little hard to know what this one’s about. I think he’s parked out by the lake, 80 miles from Santa Fe. But I’m not sure. Deep Forbidden Lake — Neil Young — I haven’t heard this in ages, since a friend played it when we were in high school. And now on to tonight’s Tops!
