Mitch McConnell’s odd frozen moment today at press conference. [1]

Something happened to Mitch McConnell in the middle of a press conference today.

He stopped speaking mid-sentence, and at first it seems he simply forgot what he had to say.

But he just stood there, holding onto the podium, looking lost or unsure of what was going on until some of the people beside him led him off the podium.

By my count, it lasted for about 25 seconds.

Pure internet speculation is saying stroke? Seizure? And many are expressing surprise he wasn’t taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

He reminded me of the blank look my mother in law used to get when she had Alzheimer’s and didn’t know where she was, but didn’t want anyone to know how confused she was.

But she wasn’t talking and sounding normal one moment and silent and lost the next.

It’s hard to hear on the video, but Sen John Barrasso, who was standing beside McConnell, stepped in and I believe said, “Hey, Mitch? Anything else you want to say?”

McConnell mutters, “Hmm?” and leans toward the man like he didn’t quite hear him.

Barrasso again says, “You want to say anything else to the press? Or should we just go back to your place?”

McConnell again says, Hmm?” But begins to move to the right of the podium, which seems to be the wrong way, because Barrasso then takes McConnell by the shoulders and turns him to the left. Barrasso walks him toward the back of the room and out of sight.

Republicans gave no explanation for it. After McConnell was led away, someone else stepped up to the podium and continued with Republican talking points, like nothing happened.

I haven’t found a video of this, but other Tweets say they didn’t take McConnell out of the room, just to sit down for a while, and then McConnell came back to the podium and said he was fine.

McConnel is 81 years old.
