PWB Peeps Open Thread: Poetry From the Fenian Cycle [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-07-28 translated by Standish Hayes O’Grady Arran of the many stags The sea strikes against her shoulder Island where great companies are fed And blue spears reddened. Skittish deer on her peaks, Lush blackberries on her waving heather Cool water flows in all her rivers And mast clusters upon her bronze oaks. There are greyhounds and beagles there Blueberries and the dark sloes of the blackthorn Her dwellings set close against her woods And scattered deer feed by her oak thickets. On her rocks grows a red-purple crop And on all her slopes a faultless grass Over her shapely crags and shady refuge Leaping goes on, dappled fawns a -skipping. Smooth her level ground, and fat the wild swine Cheerful too, her bright fields And nuts hang high on her forest hazel boughs; The long galleys go rowing past her. When the fair weather comes — the warm season— Trout lie under her rivers’ brinks Seagulls wheel, screaming each to each about the tall cliff Oh, Arran! is delightful at all times.
