Busta crushes RAGBRAI [1]

Er, make that Busta and i didn't get crushed by RAGBRAI. There is no crushing of this route in July on our ride. It was a test of survival going in. We made it.

Thanks to my wonderful spouse for talking better care of me than I do, right up to the bout of poison ivy I suffered days before departure. She and my nephew provided wash and creams that saved my arms. Thanks to my sister for providing our vehicle trailer. And, thanks to my brother and in law for driving us around in it after they invited me to join them last month.

Thanks to people across Iowa for organizing RAGBRAI, welcoming us into their towns and taking care of us while we are there. Police, sheriffs and troopers close roads for us. Fire stations open their doors and provide ample water. People in every town came out to greet us, and made sure we were well hydrated and fed. You made this experience possible for us.

Here is what Busta and I have to show for it. Four days of riding across beautiful Midwestern rolling hills, fields, forests and streams, through lovely towns, and over big river bottom land. Started and finished day 4 and day 7. Rode about 32 and 15 on other two. Day 7 was mercifully cool, and I had no mechanical issues, so we busted through 71 miles. The first 40 miles felt good anyway, which was a pleasant change from the blazing heat and sun of previous days.

The total miles cycled for me was ~175 out of 295 possible. We replaced a tire and fixed the trailer gimbal on the road. Fortunately the bike and trailer didn't lose too many screws. Mine came loose long ago.

Overall it has been a great trip, though I see ways to prepare better. Now it's time for the four hour drive home. Thanks for checking this out.

Apologies for the lack of attention to this and previous rushed diary. Will be back this evening when we are home.
