Tanks soon became the mainstay of ground armies. The Lewis Army Museum on Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Washington, includes an extensive outdoor display of tanks. Shown below are some of the tanks at the Lewis Army Museum. M103 Heavy Tank, 120mm Gun, 1960s M-4A1 Sherman Tank According to the display: “The venerable Sherman was the mainstay of U.S. Armored Forces during World War II. Rugged and reliable, over 49,000 Shermans were produced in various models during the course of the war.” This tank has a top speed of 30 mph. M-60 Patton Tank This tank was developed in response to the Soviet Union’s T-62 tanks in 1962. Over 15,000 were produced. It has a top speed of 30 mph and a range of 300 miles.
