The Indictments of Trump Prove the January 6 Trials Were Necessary [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-02 The third and maybe not last indictment of former President Donald J. Trump yesterday justifies every arrest, trial, and conviction of the rioters on January 6. Do I believe that some of the insurrectionists were on a lark? Yes. Do I think that—for some, a sort of mass hypnosis took place, and people fell in line with friends and acquaintances? Yes. Although those things may be true, that makes the defendants—now felons—more guilty, not less. Jails are full of people easily swayed by the lure of criminality that they act against the laws of the United States. Their guilt is because, like the people who defecated in the Capitol building, they knew better and thought their feelings and wants were more important than a sacred Constitutional process; in the case of January 6, an election and peaceful transfer of American power. The convictions of the many leaders and followers who broke the law that fateful January day is the non-legal predicate for the indictment(s) of Donald Trump. As much as a pouting Tucker Carlson, running Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO.), and cowering Rep. Andy Clyde (R-GA.) tried to portray the vicious beating of police officers and the destruction of property as a tourist excursion, reasonable Americans do not believe their eyes lied to them. Had most Americans been fooled into believing that January 6 was an outing gone wrong, it would weaken any case of post-election tampering by Mr. Trump. For all the gnashing of teeth by the conservative news media and efforts to make Special Counsel Jack Smith a defacto running mate on the Biden re-election ticket, conservatives cannot escape the fact Donald Trump tried to subvert almost 250 years of the American experiment. He asks the Vice President of the United States to ignore the Constitution. He came within a hair’s breadth of blackmailing the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, suggesting prison if he did not find him 11,780 votes (one more than the 11,779 which was what Trump believed to be President Biden’s margin of victory). Elections in this country are not reversed because someone hates to lose or cannot accept a loss. When former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lost the election, she was pilloried and made fun of for walking in the woods and thought to be contemplating her future. She did not say coming to Washington, DC, “will be wild” or suggested confiscating voting machines while amassing groups of fake electors. They were no bevy of sweaty lawyers with smeared hair dye or one summoning the Kraken. The lives of election workers were not threatened to the point where they were forced to leave their homes and hide their identities. Listening to the followers of Trump outside his rallies, one almost pities their derangement. Talk of JFK Jr. being alive and secretly waiting for a signal from Trump to reassume power and Joe Biden being a clone. Donald Trump deserves his day in court, and America deserves justice. President Biden made it a campaign pledge to restore the soul of America. The judicial system is now tasked with saving its heart.
