Trump's Litigious Life before the Presidency [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-02 Witch-hunt. Fraud. Scam. Revenge. Abuse of power. All words used by Trump and his MAGA crowd to describe the DOJ’s efforts to hold Trump accountable for his actions while he was the President. Trump said it himself: he is an innocent man. If he is innocent in all of these cases, it means that the only time in Trump’s life when he WASN’T breaking the law was...during his presidency. To hear the MAGA crowd tell it, prior to his presidency, Trump was just a wildly successful businessman. Then, when he announced his bid for the presidency, the Democrats started making stuff up about him to make him look bad because they were so threatened by his awesomeness. Instead of seeing Trump’s political crimes as an extension of a lifelong pattern, they saw them as Democratic lies, made up to make him look bad. Reality check time, Trumpsters. Trump has always been a crook. He has scammed people his entire adult life, and because Daddy set him up in business, then left him a gazillion dollars when he died, he’s been able to buy his way out of trouble every step of the way. Talk about elitism… And still, now, where is his Roy Cohn? The lawyer who represented, among others, all five of New York’s mob families. The lawyer who taught him to always proclaim innocence, always countersue, and always accuse the other party of worse crimes. Go way back to Trump violating New York’s Fair Housing laws. Cohn. Trump using labor tied to organized crime to get Trump Tower built. Cohn. The list goes on. And even after Cohn’s death from AIDS, the fraud and criminality continue to the doorstep of Trump University. (Actually, I don’t think it even had a doorstep...) Can any Trump supporter explain why Trump needed a mob lawyer to represent him? (Personally, nobody I know has ever needed a mob lawyer to represent them.) And even with Cohn as his legal mastermind, Trump spent millions and millions of dollars over the years to settle lawsuits out of court. Why? Because he could, because Daddy made him rich. Talk about elitism… So, here we have a guy who has been charged with crimes and sued multiple times during his adult life, who always managed to settle his way out of trouble. Hence, he’s never been found guilty and sent to jail by a court because of $$$$$$$. Did I mention elitism? Enter Jack Smith. Enter Fani Willis. Unfortunately for Trump, there are no financial settlements available to buy his way out of conspiracy to defraud the government and obstruct an official proceeding, or conspiracy to overturn an election. Trump is burning through his and his supporters’ money just in an effort to put up multiple legal defenses, much less buy his way out of this. For the first time in his life, Trump doesn’t have enough money to buy his “innocence.” So what does he do instead? He resorts to the lessons he learned from Roy Cohn — always proclaim innocence, always countersue, always accuse the other person of committing worse crimes. Do this over and over and over again, until your supporters believe it, and people in the legal system become so sick of it and numb to it that they give up and walk away from the table. And Trump’s followers are totally supportive of this gangster mentality. Ah yes...MAGA...Make America Gangster Again. But Smith and Willis aren’t walking away from the table. The January 6 Committee didn’t walk away from the table. New York’s DA’s aren’t walking away from the table. E. Jean Carroll didn’t walk away from the table. Kudos to all of them for not caving into this elitist, spoiled rich brat of a man child, in spite of the constant gangster threats to their lives and the lives of their family members. God bless them for their courage. Trump is a crook. He has always been a crook. Even Roy Cohn, the man who taught him how to lie and lie and lie some more, knew this. The crimes he is accused of now are just the most recent in a long list of crimes he has committed his entire life. This is not a Democratic witch-hunt or a scam. It is a logical extension of Trump’s lifelong criminality and amorality. The only difference is that, for the first time in his life, he can’t buy his way out of trouble. And there is no Roy Cohn.
