Deep Concerns Over Tampa Mayor Castor's Proposed Tax Increase [1]

Dear People of Tampa and All Those Feeling the Rising Price of Housing,

I write to you as a lifelong Tampa resident, deeply concerned about Mayor Jane Castor's proposal to increase the property tax rate a full percentage point. This comes at a time when our community faces significant financial pressures, such as property insurance and inflation costs rising faster than any other state.

This 300+ page budget document detailing the proposal is overly long to the point of obfuscating the details. The length and complexity of this document make it difficult to comprehend. 1. Impact on Homeowners and Renters: Considering the rising insurance costs and the income-to-housing-cost gap, the proposed tax increase may exacerbate the financial struggles of homeowners and renters.

2. Effects on Local Businesses: A tax hike may stifle small business growth and employment opportunities, further straining already struggling average incomes in Tampa.

3. Need for Transparency: Beyond the overly complex budget document, we must ensure clear planning and transparent use of the increased tax funds for transportation, affordable housing, and safety.

4. Consider Alternative Solutions: Exploring alternatives to this tax increase can prevent additional burdens on those already facing financial challenges.

The complexities of the budget document, combined with the broader economic pressures, make this proposed tax increase particularly concerning. This agenda is a long time coming, as Buckhorn also increased this rate under his tenure. More money going to city hall means they can usher more money and expensive contracts to their friends, family, and lobbyist buddies. I urge you to consider these issues carefully and seek solutions that serve Tampa's interests without imposing further hardships.
