Dysfunction in the Virginia Democratic Party [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-03 Democrats need to take back the state House and increase their majority in the state Senate, so you’d think they would be working hard to make sure a Democrat ran in every district. Instead, they have kept many Democrats off the ballot: Jasmine Lipscomb (see all the Daily Kos diaries), Gregory Maxwell, Jessica Rowlands, Zach Coltrain, Dan Tomlinson, and me. (See the Cardinal News article.) I recently discovered that the incumbent Republican’s signatures were certified and his nomination certification submitted in less than 24 hours. It took two WEEKS to certify my signatures and then another SEVEN DAYS to submit the nomination certification, almost missing the deadline to do so – which was improperly addressed so was never received by the Department of Elections. The nominating committee of 7 could have knocked mine out in less than 24 hours, too. Who was in control? Now, I am expected to defend their mistake, and hire an attorney to do so, to show the State Board of Elections (SBE) how the law (VA Code 24.2-511) provides for the Board to put my name on the ballot just as they did for Terry Kilgore (R) in 2019 and Dave LaRock (R) in 2021 (See the Virginia Mercury article.) who had attorneys represent them. That is messed up. Candidates cannot be held responsible for the mistakes of their party leaders. Yet here I am trying to raise $2,000 for an attorney to represent me. Where are the people responsible for keeping me off the ballot? I expect the SBE to certify my nomination at their August 15 meeting and put my name on the ballot as they did for Republicans, so, despite the dysfunction, I am making plans for whichever way their ruling goes. If they rule in my favor, I need to be ready to hit the ground running – the first day of in-person early voting is September 22 and I need $1,600 for yard signs. See the diary by Zen Trainer.
