[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-04 Several diaries have been written recently about a possible resurgence in Covid cases and hospitalizations here in the US, so I guess it’s time to do another update and try and put things into a proper context. As the above chart of weekly deaths vs serious hospitalizations indicates, the trends for both have been strongly to the downside since their most recent peak in early January, but appear to have flattened out during July. And while the CDC reports a 12% increase in Covid cases among all hospitalized patients over the past week, that so far has only translated to a 2% increase in actual ICU cases. Unfortunately, since just 20 states have reported any new case or death data in the past 6 weeks, the death trendline can no longer be seen as reliable as that for hospitalizations. So while the current uptick in hospitalized Covid cases (the first in at least 5 months) is cause for some concern, it remains to be seen whether this will persist long enough to translate into a significant new increase in ICU cases and/or deaths, or will just remain a relatively minor blip in the overall historical record.
