Ghana- John's Underground Music Show [1]

John in Ghana is concerned with helping people in absolute, desperate need and I have been proud to help him with that, but his main interest is in helping and promoting poor artists and musicians and those who are active in underground music in Accra and the surrounding areas.

His goal is, first, to help them to survive and beyond that to gain recognition and to encourage their careers in music and other arts. Many of these kids are living homeless on the beach in Accra. None of them have the money for professional assistance in their music or in their lives as a whole.

Last Friday John and his friend Okra put on a show where these young musicians could perform, showcase their talents, and make a little money. John and Okra rented a space and some equipment and organized everything so that the kids could have their chance in front of a real audience.

The photo above was taken the day before the show. I don’t have any photos yet of the actual show itself. I am looking forward to them. John said it was a big success.

I only spoke briefly with John yesterday. He was very tired and not feeling well. A man tried to get into the show without paying (they were charging 10 cedis, about a dollar if I am doing my math right) and when John tried to stop him he punched John in the face. John isn’t a very big man, he probably should have had someone else be the gatekeeper. So John wasn’t feeling very chatty yesterday.

John didn’t make any money for himself. The money raised went to the kids who were performing. And anyway, this is part of his work to help others. But I think he had a good time (except for the punch) and the kids had their chance, so that is a good thing.
