Sweden’s keeper the difference as the USA rue a match decided on penalties [1]

The 2023 World Cup match between Sweden and the USA has ended with a penalty decision for Sweden, after their first 120 minutes was characterised by gritty defence and almost nonexistent offence. After finishing 2nd in their group, the USA are now off to Tullamarine Airport for the long flight home.

I don’t want to dwell on the penalty shootout — they’re horrible for all concerned. The one point I particularly wanted to make was that the Naarm (Melbourne) crowd (my hometown, and the Southern Hemisphere’s sporting capital) was nothing but welcoming towards and respectful of Megan Rapinoe, when she was eventually subbed on. No nonsense MAGA-style booing or idiocy for her refusal to worship the flag, just cheers. Most of the USA supporter base were stuck in Sydney, an hour’s flight away, having anticipated a higher group finish, but there were still plenty of Yanks there. I’m very glad to advise that they were enthusiastic and sensible.
