David Hogg invites you all to be Founding Members of 'Leaders We Deserve' [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-09 It has been over five years since the mass shooting that took the lives of 14 of his fellow students and 3 school staff members, but David Hogg has never moved on. After the shooting, Hogg and other student survivors organized the March for our Lives protest just weeks later on March 24, 2018 in Washington, D.C. It garnered national and international attention. Time Magazine coverage of the more than 800 marches across the U.S. and around the world: https://time.com/longform/march-for-our-lives-protests-around-the-world/ Hundreds of thousands of students, parents, teachers and their supporters took to the streets on March 24, in a mass show of force in favor of gun control and school safety. More than 800 marches across the U.S. and around the world took place in support of the main March For Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C.—above, photographed by Gabriella Demczuk for TIME—that was organized by survivors of the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Here’s what it looks like on the ground, from London and Paris to Sao Paulo and Miami. For a moment many of us thought the tipping point in the US over the dangerous firearms violence in our country had finally been reached. Sadly, we were wrong. More than five years later, David Hogg, who graduated from Harvard University in May of 2023, is ready for the next phase of his work to end gun violence in America. Today, I received this text message: Hey Angela, it's David Hogg, gun safety advocate and co-founder of March For Our Lives. Far-right extremists are willing to let children be slaughtered at school and watch our planet burn for personal gain. But badass young people have a habit of being underestimated - and scaring the shit out of Republicans by proving our power. That's why today with an incredible team, I'm launching Leaders We Deserve - a grassroots organization dedicated to electing young leaders across the country, from Congress to State Legislatures, to help defeat the far-right's agenda. But the GOP knows that young people are a direct threat to their power, and they'll do anything to keep us silent and keep pushing their destructive policies that will destroy our future. There is no shortage of people who want us to fail. Who are so determined to maintain the status quo that they will spend MILLIONS keeping Gen Z candidates from winning. That's why our Day One Founder Goal is so critical. We've set an ambitious Day One goal of $100,000 in the first 24 hours. So I'm personally asking: Will you chip in $25 and join our movement as a Day One Founder of Leaders We Deserve today? link to donate : https://secure.actblue.com/donate/lwd-ga-txt-aug23?refcode=dh-txt-20230809-b1&amount=25 Far-right extremists and the status quo are counting on us to fail. Let's prove them wrong. This is what you’ll see at that ActBlue link: Become a Day One Founder In 2018, young voters shattered turnout records. In 2020, we helped power President Biden to victory. And in 2022, we were critical to holding off a Republican red wave. Now it's time to elect a new generation of progressive leaders to enact the change we need. Leaders We Deserve is leading the fight to elect young, fearless progressives to Congress and state legislatures across the country, but we can't do it without your help. I couldn't think of a better use of $25, so I sent David some money this morning. I urge everyone who can, to do so, too.
