Ghana- Update on John [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-10 I wrote yesterday that my friend John in Ghana had been taken by a friend into the hospital due to loss of blood and extreme weakness. We had thought his bleeding problem was solved but it came back with a vengeance and he had a sudden attack that was nasty, ugly, and dangerous. I waited all day for news on his situation and finally heard from him last night. He had received first aid and a drip. I don’t know all of the details; he was very weak and soon asked to talk later so that he could rest (the time we were talking was about 2 in the morning in Ghana.) The doctor was to come in at 9 am their time to talk with him. Evidently this went well enough that he can be released. It sounds as if he has a continuing health problem and will just have to do his best to be careful with his diet and his activities. I don’t know the details and John’s very broken English sometimes make it hard to know exactly what he is trying to say anyway. Also, to be honest I am not sure if the doctors are telling him all of the details and, if they are, if he is understanding them. So anything I could say is not necessarily swear on a Bible accurate. I could speculate on the nature of his illness but I don’t want to say anything that might be challenged when I really am speaking from very limited information. At any rate, at least for now John is not in any immediate danger from his health. The next step is that I will have to try to figure out how to manage to pay his bill so that they will release him. This is more of a problem than it would be in the US. In many countries in Africa they will not release a patient until they pay their bill. They hold them and keep increasing the debt each day. Ultimately they call the police and the patient goes straight to jail, though I am not sure they do that in Ghana. But one step at a time. John’s health remains fragile but he is not bleeding to death.
