"Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" for Trump — The Week in Editorial Cartoons, Part 1 (Update #6) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-15 When Will Our “Long National Nightmare” Be Over? Is there an end in sight? No American could be proud of the situation the country finds itself in. Forget the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates on the morality of slavery and its extension into new territories; FDR’s hopeful rhetoric and savy leadership throughout the 1930s that lifted the country out of economic depression and calmly guided it in the 1940s through the horrors of a world war; Harry Truman’s brave stance in 1948 to desegregate the United States Armed Services; or JFK’s inspirational 1961 Inaugural Speech asking his countrymen to sacrifice for the greater good. Now, it has all come down to this. The level of political discourse has degenerated to a point where it’s hardly recognizable. According to lawyer John Dean, this is a much bigger deal than the Watergate Scandal, one which forced Richard Nixon to resign as President of the United States. While “Tricky Dick” certainly was a crook — and his abuse of political power is well documented — he did not, unlike Donald Trump, challenge the legitimacy of our politican institutions. Once the writing was on the wall and it looked certain that he would not only be impeached by the US House of Representatives but convicted in the US Senate and removed from office, Republican political leaders urged Nixon to resign. He did so on August 8, 1974. Is there any Republican elected official today who has the guts to confront Trump with the truth? x respected conservative @judgeluttig says Republican officials who haven't condemned frmr Pres Trump "have betrayed their oath" https://t.co/zJUBA77Vv5 — Judy Woodruff (@JudyWoodruff) August 15, 2023 For Donald Trump and his ilk, nothing is sacred and if established traditions can be ignored and laws can be overturned to stay in power, they simply don’t care. For his role in subverting democracy to overturn the 2020 Election results in the State of Georgia, Trump has been indicted on multiple counts. Key line from the 98-page indictment: “Trump and the other defendants charged in this indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.” Trump faces 13 felony charges himself, including racketeering, conspiracy to commit forgery and filing false documents. It appears there are also 30 unindicted co-conspirators This is where we are as a country. A Spectacle That Has Become Surreally Routine Peter Baker: “The nation once recoiled at presidential candidates caught driving under the influence or swiping lines in a speech without credit. Now one of the two major parties has not ruled out a front-runner charged with conspiring to subvert democracy, endangering national security, obstructing justice and falsifying records of hush money to a pornographic film star.” “The notion that a rap sheet with multiple felonies would not be automatically disqualifying would have stunned the 44 presidents who came before him, including the Republicans.” Updates Posted Here Update #5 — 3:21pm Role Reversal A touching scene from Gone With the Wind! lol More to Come Later Update #4 — 2:58 pm The Sequels Are Better Than the Original Mark Meadows in Serious Legal Trouble Update #3 — 2:48 pm Well… I’m Not Bored at All!
