GOPenstein’s Monster advances on its creator [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-15 After watching the GOP spend decades pushing punitive, excessively harsh, and defendant-hostile policies that make life a living hell for anyone who has a run-in with the law (and making a mockery of the principle of being presumed innocent until found guilty in court), it is just so overwhelmingly schadenfreudelicious to see Trump and 18 of his cronies getting a taste of their own medicine. In Georgia, the presumption is against releasing defendants on bail unless the DEFENDANT can prove that they pose NO RISK of witness tampering or further criminality. That “no risk” is the standard in the law — the burden is on the accused to show they deserve pretrial release, and given Trump’s long well-documented history of actual witness tampering and threats of violence against anyone and everyone who stands against him (including the judge, prosecutor and witnesses in this very case), he is in very serious danger of being held in jail until trial. On top of that, Georgia has virtually done away with pardons. The governor has no pardon power at all, and they can only be issued after at least part of a prison term has been served. Of course, these laws were enacted with the intention of using them to abuse people who were poor and brown-skinned. I’m sure that much of the outrage that the Republican talking heads are spewing is because they cannot believe these laws are actually being — GASP! — applied to rich white people too. But their hypocrisy just makes their comeuppance all the more intensely satisfying. As the meme goes, “`I never thought the leopards would eat MY face’, sobbed the woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party.” I’ll conclude this diary with the video for a song that is really appropriate here on several levels. Not just the literal words of the lyrics, but also the subtext. Rob Halford has said that the song was really about gay men like him having to worry about running afoul of sodomy laws. And that makes it extra spicy here, because Donald Trump is completely fucked.
