It would be political suicide for Democrats to rely solely on the abortion issue for 2024 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-15 Tom Malinkowski, defending his House seat for NJ-7, made protecting a woman’s right to choose the central issue of his campaign to retain his seat for 2022. He lost to Tom Kean, Jr. This after already defeating Kean in 2020 and having already holding the seat since 2018. In a very blue state, though admittingly not an entirely blue district. Kean Jr. barely had to open his mouth to defeat Malinkowski, and won by three percentage points. I’ve been pounding my head into the wall for years about this, but Democrats need to 110% take the mantle on bread-and-butter issues like law and order (yes, need to be tough on crime, promoting renewed trust between law enforcement and the public, repeating over-and-over again how the GOP has done nothing but put guns in every criminal’s hands and have endangered the public, etc). The Democratic party also desperately needs to acquire talented people who know how to craft effective messages that cut directly to the chase. In the last election, abortion rights won state referendums but didn’t win campaigns (see also the colossal disaster of Mandela Barnes’ inept campaign — Ron Johnson’s seat was there for the taking). Don’t get misled by the Ohio 1 result: like 2022, it might win referendum, but it won’t translate to Democratic congressional victories.
