Street Prophets Friday: The Tatra Auto Museum (photo diary) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-18 Well, you're lucky you caught me after dinner. I honestly couldn't eat a single one of you tender morsels. So relax, and join in another of my little, Friday-flavored, community open thread diaries. This week I'm beginning the dive into my family vacation to northern Moravia and southern Poland with some photos from the first of two Tatra museums we visited on our first full day in the Ostrava region of Moravia. Like most early car manufacturers, Tatra started as a small wagon and carriage factory back in the 1850s in the town of Kopřivnice. When the railroad began laying tracks in the Austro-Hungarian Empire they tried their hand at building railroad carriages. When the automobile came onto the scene, Tatra became the first car manufacturer in the Austro-Hungarian Empire— with a bit of help from the Benz company, supplier of their first internal combustion motors. Präsident- a 1977 reconstruction of the original prototype from 1897. I've managed to completely miss the most important bit in this photo— it was the first automobile in the world to have a front bumper! Engineer Hans Ledwinka and his revolutionary new chassis design, the T 11 from 1923 I don't know practically anything about cars and even I'm impressed by the T 11 I really enjoyed a series of safety posters. That's how you come to lose your legs! Tatra was an innovator in the mass production of aerodynamic automobiles Photo of the interior of a train passenger carriage built for the Orient Express by Tatra Tatra made a lot more than just cars, airplane motors, meat grinders, refrigerators ... This T 600 Tatraplan from 1948 was given to Josef Stalin on his 70th birthday. It was returned to Kopřivnice in 1976. The factory made military vehicles too And this curious snowmobile prototype: Tatra V 855 from 1942 Cobbled together from various car and airplane parts, the autocross Tatra Baghira built in the early 1970s Thanks for stopping by. Next week, a second Tatra museum in Kopřivnice. What's on your mind this week? Have anything to share? A link, a diary, a bit of music? We had a bit of a crazy week with Fabulous Mother-In-Law taking a tumble down the last step of an old staircase and managing to break her wrist. Midnight run to the emergency room at the nearest hospital, where they decided to keep her. Unsatisfactory attempt to reset the bone the next day and surgery the day after that. Finally got to pick her up from the hospital this morning. She's doing fine, but with the Alzheimer's, we’ve been going over the whole experience with her every hour or so. This is an open thread.
