Roger Stone Documentary Filled With Diane Arbus Images [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-19 "You may not know this, but tomorrow is shoot a liberal for Christ day," said Roger Stone in the new documentary, A Storm Foretold. Say what you will about Donald Trump’s number one ratfucker, it's hard not to be dazzled by his extemporaneous wit. That one-liner sums up his technique. He invokes Christ to endorse random violence toward people with whom he disagrees, which some believe is antithetical to Christ's message, and antithetical to the idea that Americans should respect political opponents. But Stone was only kidding, haha. He can't be held responsible of somebody got the wrong idea. But words alone don’t fully capture the protagonist's larger than life personality, or the film's overall impact, which seems like a combination of The Sopranos and The Real Housewives franchise, as directed by Diane Arbus. Stone hangs out with people who look and act like they walked off the set of The Sopranos, and like Tony Soprano, Stone likes to puff on big cigars collect his money in cash, and gets off on screwing over anyone who crosses him. But Tony was smart enough to know when keep a low profile and his mouth shut. In another sense, the film seems reminiscent of The Real Housewives, which, like most reality television, is designed to humiliate people who lack self awareness. The cast members are spoiled brats who think they're fascinating because they're glamorous, when they are merely pretentious and immature; so they act out whenever placed in moderately stressful situations. Which is why we feel superior when watching them. Stone thinks of himself as a Svengali who brilliantly crafts political images, but seems unaware of how freakish he looks in the visuals. Donald Trump wouldn't allow closeups of his forehead when his roots were being touched up, or be seen in a red white and blue costume on election night, or dancing with a rap performer while dressed like a Batman villain. Or other unflattering poses. By the end, Stone opens a firehose of vitriol directed at Trump after learning that he would not get a second pardon. Even if you're not into the ticktock of January 6 or the Trump litigation, Stone's low rent depravity makes for compelling viewing.
