This Week in the War on Women [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-19 Especially since the Dobbs decision, I’ve found Jessica Valenti’s Abortion, Every Day to be essential reading. She’s recently added a new series discussing the right-wing war on contraception — the one thing that would best accomplish their alleged goal of preventing abortions! The currently popular tactic is to redefine contraception as “abortion.” They started with emergency contraception (and even got the bizarre ruling that an employer’s “belief” that it’s abortion can exempt them from providing coverage, even though it’s factually false). Now they’ve expanded to claiming that IUD’s and hormonal birth control (pill, patch, etc) are “abortifacients.” About the only form of contraception they haven’t attacked yet is condoms — the one method not really under the woman’s control. Meanwhile, the 5th Circuit US Appeals Court ruled against banning Mifepristone (an ingredient in medication abortions) while still limiting it significantly. The dissenting judge, James Ho, included in his dissent the bizarre argument that doctors experience an “aesthetic injury” when a patient chooses abortion. By that bizarre logic, it could also be an “aesthetic injury” to choose not to get pregnant at all. It all comes down to control, and the bizarre notion that women’s bodies are some sort of public property, not our own. Which is why women have been fighting back in numbers that the men in power clearly didn’t expect when they struck down Roe v. Wade. As always, this diary is a group effort. Thanks to officebss, mettle fatigue, Angmar, SandraLLAP, and the WOW crew for links & discussion. Reproductive Rights: Bethany Cox, 22, accused of procuring a poison to self-abort shortly after the first Covid lockdown, is due to appear before a judge this week. Nebraska is moving to put a measure on the statewide ballot to include reproductive rights in the state constitution. Every time a state has put it to a vote since the Dobbs decision, the pro-choice side has won, even in deep red states. Violence and Harassment: Humza Yousaf: Misogynists like Andrew Tate hold sway over thousands of men and boys. Male leaders like me must address that. We cannot be passive bystanders when the actions of men cause such pain and suffering. It’s vital to listen and learn. From PrismReports: Investigation reveals physical and sexual assault and alleged civil rights violations in Texas juvenile prisons, yet in California matters are barely better. Ex-boyfriend ordered to pay $1.2 billion in damages for years of harassment and revenge porn. From Associated Press- Inmates at California women’s prison sue federal government over sexual abuse. Eight inmates at a San Francisco Bay Area lockup — dubbed the 'rape club' by prisoners and workers alike — filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the federal Bureau of Prisons, saying sexual abuse and exploitation has not stopped despite the prosecution of the former warden and several former officers. A decision is expected this week on whether Mason Greenwood can return to Manchester United. Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Criminal charges were dropped in February after key witnesses “withdrew their cooperation from the investigation.” Five men found guilty of sexually exploiting two girls in Rochdale UK, from the time the girls were 12 and 13.
