Carlos Santana concert features an anti-trans lecture [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-08-24 Carlos Santana, a counter-culture icon whose music was the soundtrack of the youth of so many who grew up in the 1960s/70s — and whose music is now enjoyed by their grandkids — embraced a conservative talking point and shared it with his fans in New Jersey. In his words: “When God made you and me, before we came out of the womb, you know who you are and what you are. Later on, when you grow out of it, you see things, and you start believing that you could be something that sounds good, but you know it ain’t right. Because a woman is a woman and a man is a man. That’s it. Whatever you wanna do in the closet, that’s your business. I’m OK with that.” Obviously, his beliefs are important to him. And he is free to say what he wants. But why does he care? And why is it a priority for him? Are trans-Americans a threat to America? Do the trans pose as severe an existential planetary crisis as global warming? Do they kill as relentlessly as cancer and heart disease? Is the fact that a small number of kids were born with divergent physical and psychological genders as devastating as millions of children going hungry? Where does he stand on school massacres? He knows he is saying something that many of his fans — if not most — disagree with. And in doing so, he uses the oldest device in the bigot’s handbook — trying to blunt the cutting edge of his opinion with a “you be you” coda — “that’s your business. I’m OK with that.” It is no better than starting a remark with “I’m not a racist, but ….” Perhaps most disappointing is that a man, celebrated for his creativity for over half a century, is parroting a political orthodoxy spouted by the least creative people you can imagine — political and religious conservatives. His two most successful singles from the Woodstock years were covers of Willie Bobo’s Evil Ways And Fleetwood Mac’s Black Magic Woman Now he is covering the GOP’s songbook x Carlos Santana goes on anti-trans rant during New Jersey concert: “When God made you and me, before we came out of the womb, you know who you are and what you are… a woman is a woman and a man is a man.” pic.twitter.com/fss8d4qukK — Pop Base (@PopBase) August 24, 2023 Sadly, it seems a black magic woman has turned his heart to stone.
