Virginia State Board of Elections Forces Democratic Write-In Campaign [1]

The Republican-controlled Virginia State Board of Elections (hereinafter called “the Board”) has forced me to run a Democratic write-in campaign because, after party officials made a mistake (a small typo) when submitting certification of my nomination by email to the Virginia Department of Elections, they – the Board – have refused to certify me as the duly nominated candidate for Senate District 9 and place my name on the ballot.

This comes on the heels of the 2019 and 2021 elections when the Democratic-controlled Board certified the nominations of four Republicans and placed their names on the ballot when their party officials had paperwork filing mishaps. The current Republican Chair of the Board was a member of the Board when he made a motion to certify Dave LaRock’s (R) nomination in 2021, and yet he did not ask this Board to make a motion on my nomination. The entire Board has remained silent.

There are pros and cons to running write-in, and I certainly was indecisive, but I always came back to the reason I was running in the first place: for the people, to give them a choice on the ballot, to give them a voice and the opportunity to elect someone who truly cares about them and their future.

Virginia is the last stronghold in the south to protect our personal rights and freedoms through democracy. Democrats must take back the House and increase their majority in the Senate. We have reached the fork in the road: do we go with democracy or fascism? Purposely keeping Democrats off the ballot seems to be leading us down the path to fascism.
