White to move and mate in two #398 - Chandrayaan-3 [1]

On August 23, the Indian Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram landed successfully in the south polar region of the moon and deployed its rover named Pragyan. It was a major accomplishment for the Indian space program. Two days earlier, the Russian Luna-25 mission ended in failure, its lander crashing on the lunar surface after a botched orbit change maneuver.

The Chandrayaan-3 lander and rover will conduct experiments for one lunar day, about 14 days, before the cold dark lunar night brings an end to the mission, which relies on solar power for operation. There is some hope that it may survive the night and wake up to sunshine in the morning.

The images below taken by the rover is a reminder that the moon is a desolate inhospitable place; it has no atmosphere, no magnetic field, harmful solar and cosmic radiation and temperature swings of over 200°C across day and night. Better robots than humans?

On August 27, 2023, the Rover came across a 4-meter diameter crater positioned 3 meters ahead of its location.

The Rover was commanded to retrace the path.
