The Trump Trial Date Is a Big Mistake [1]

The premise of this article is that we be concerned that calendars of these legal proceedings make the politics of the presidential nomination process inconvenient, yet the most salient point of having our court system is precisely that it remain free and independent of politics. What we are facing is a concerted attempt by a political manipulator to bend all branches of our democracy to him, and eventually to break them. This is the danger, not whether his supporters will rush to his media-oriented defense. Just as the courts must remain evenhanded as they apply the assumption of innocence they also must remain evenhanded in their application of the deference they afford any defendant. It is of paramount importance that the entire nation witness this person receiving treatment equal to any other accused felon, regardless of whom it upsets. It is, in fact, the heal-the-nation deference to Nixon in the form of the Ford pardon that has led to this man's ascendence. Allowing delay, obfuscation, and assumed entitlement is the error.
