Louisiana Loses an Important Gay Doctor [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-01 Until recently Louisiana only had 3 pediatric cardiac subspecialists in the entire state to manage children needing heart transplants. Now they have two. Dr. Jake Kleinmahon, his husband and their family have left Louisiana because of the slate of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that has recently passed. For those keeping score, there were three significant laws passed in Louisiana this year: (1) a ban on gender-affirming care; (2) a “Don’t Say Gay” bill; and (3) a bill prohibiting the use of a student’s preferred pronouns. Democrat governor John Bell Edwards vetoed all three bills. His veto killed two of the bills, but the legislature overrode his veto on the bill banning gender-affirming care. Few people want to stay in a place where they’re not wanted, and no one wants to stay somewhere they’re hated. It seems like the anti-LGBTQ+ crowd in the red states have never asked themselves a simple question: What do LGBTQ+ people do when they’re not having sex? Might they be repairing roads, directing air traffic, managing disinfectant levels at water treatment facilities, preparing people’s taxes, stocking food in grocery stores or putting out fires that threaten people’s homes? Might they even be performing heart transplants on dying children? Turns out the answer is “yes.” And that doesn’t even consider the money. A pediatric transplant subspecialist like Dr. Kleinmahon earns a minimum of $600k per year. That’s a lot of money to spend on local goods and services, thus supporting the salaries of the local people providing those goods and services. Multiply that effect by all of the other people who have made a decision similar to Dr. Kleinmahon’s. Be careful what you wish for.
