Preaching to the converted here, I hope. But I’ve been fighting for the cause of science on various fora since the internet went mainstream, and it hasn’t been an easy sell. So one more time, in case you weren’t listening:

This book should not be necessary. Over 150 years since Darwin and Wallace proposed the concept, the evidence supporting evolution by natural selection is now overwhelming. Every day the torrent of evidence grows stronger, as new results pour in from many disparate fields, including some, such as molecular biology, beyond Darwin's imagining.

This book should not be necessary, and yet it has never been needed more. Astonishingly, while scientists apply our deepening understanding of evolution at the forefronts of biology and medicine, we are simultaneously witnessing the resurgence of creationism. Once confined to America, it is now reaching out across Europe and the rest of the world in the wake of religious fundamentalism. Battle has been joined, and it is perhaps the most important intellectual battle of our time, for it concerns who we are and our relationship to all other life on Earth. Evolution matters.

So what is evolution? What does it mean to say it is a scientific theory? What are its claims? And what is the evidence supporting them? Jerry Coyne is one of the world's leading scientists working on speciation -- the formation of new species, the very heart of Darwinian theory. Few are more qualified to give an account of evolution.
