First lady Jill Biden tests positive for COVID-19; president tests negative [1]

The White House has announced that first lady Jill Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. President Joe Biden tested negative.

The first lady’s spokesperson Elizabeth Alexander issued a statement that read:

“This evening, the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19. She is currently experiencing only mild symptoms. She will remain at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.”

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Biden was administered a COVID test on Monday evening and tested negative. She said that the president will be regularly tested this week and monitored for symptoms.

The president and first lady were in Florida on Saturday to survey damage from Hurricane Idalia and comfort victims.

Earlier Monday, President Biden traveled on his own to Philadelphia to deliver a Labor Day speech.

CNN said Biden, who is 80, is scheduled to present the Medal of Honor to an Army captain in a White House ceremony Tuesday before leaving Thursday for the G20 Summit in India.

CNN said:

Last summer, the first lady tested positive for Covid-19 while vacationing in South Carolina in August. President Joe Biden tested positive last July. Both experienced rebound cases shortly after being treated with Paxlovid.
