White to move and mate in two #401 - Here comes Comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-05 Comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) is a relatively bright comet now approaching the sun. The closest approach to earth will be on Sep 12, perihelion will be on Sep 17. It is currently about 0.98 AU from Earth, 0.5 AU from the Sun (1 AU = average Sun-Earth distance = 150M km). It should be visible using binoculars except it is too close to the Sun as seen from earth, hence it is visible very low near the Horizon just before Sunrise. The comet has a period of ~433 years and last visited the inner solar system in 1588. Its orbit extends out to 114 AU, far beyond the orbit of Neptune. See theskylive.com/… for more info. Hope you get a chance to see it.
