Another Saturday Night - Music As a Snapshot of History [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-09 Welcome to another Saturday night of music, memories, and conversations. Last week we went meta and celebrated music about music. This week we're being more direct, and the theme is music that was a snapshot of a particular time in the past. I became an adult at the very end of the Cold War, and for a brief few years, we were in a transition phase between “Soviets Bad” and “Russians Bad” it was a time of promise with mixed results, exemplified in Jesus Jones’ “Right Here, Right Now”: Music wasn’t as instant as it is now back in 1970 — this song was in reaction to one of the worst instances of police terrorism on American soil — the murder of four Kent State students by undisciplined thugs from the Ohio National Guard during a protest on May 4, 1970. The song was recorded on May 21, 1970. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young — “Ohio” — Law enforcement has continued to be an occupying force in the past 53 years, with a peculiar tendency to be very patient with white stochastic terrorists and chuds at the Capitol while emptying out full clips into or suffocating POC. This is specifically about the killing of unarmed Black man Amadou Diallo by the NYPD on February 4, 1999, and police unions had a hissy fit, calling for boycotts and refusing to work his shows. (They probably thought “Born In the U.S.A.” was an “America, Fuck Yeah” patriotic song. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band — “American Skin (41 Shots)” — Gentle reminder: Please continue to put the name of your selection in yourcomment along with your song. Those of us on our phones? We really appreciate it. You know how this works — Put your quarter in the slot and your song inthe comments. This is your Saturday night jukebox and the party starts NOW.
