ShelterBox Diary 2 : Morocco Earthquake 2,000 killed [1]

ShelterBox’s emergency team is closely monitoring the events in Morocco following the powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake, which struck late on Friday night, just 43 miles south of Marrakesh. It’s the strongest earthquake to be recorded in the region and was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria.

The earthquake hit just after 11pm local time, under the cover of darkness, when many people would have been at home asleep. People spent the night out on the streets, fearful of more aftershocks, either unable or not wanting to, return home. Over 2,000 people are known to have lost their lives, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.

We’re gathering information from all possible sources to see how significant the need for emergency shelter is and if we are well-placed to help. Initial reports suggest buildings have been badly damaged or collapsed, primarily outside cities and towns. With large distances between mountain villages and access routes blocked with rubble and cars, it will take time to fully understand the extent of the damage and shelter needs.

As I sit here and watch the news about the earthquake in Morocco, think about how the ShelterBox works to help during worldwide disasters. Many people remember during the Haitian earthquake, safe shelters were immediately needed to serve as hospitals. ShelterBox was there for the amputations. My first ShelterBox Diaries were numbered and I wrote through the night. Maybe a month of writing at night and counting small donations in the comments. Basically YOU MADE ME SO VIRAL that I got outed as a Democrat while being a card carrying Progressive Conservative in Alberta. (Ralph Klein liked Bill as his “bug guy”.)

So it gets posted in Orlando paper that I was TexMex. Oops! I was writing from all the way from the Canadian bald prairies.

Ok so when I got outed, my Canadian Rotary club mates decided to use this to fundraise more for the Canadian ShelterBox. I even got a citation from the Provincial Rotary chairman and my club bought me a membership as Paul Harris Fellow.
