[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-14 Climate Emergency teamwork is critical! Please support birches’ ‘Climate Strike’ series daily. Ironically, despite the ‘earth shattering’ and ongoing environmental catastrophes we are witnessing, our climate community is still the unloved child of DK, struggling, like a pre-Prince Cinderella. Environmental collapse is the ‘formal ball’ that is beginning to transform us, but in the meantime, as a ‘community’, we need to support our dedicated players, as well as nurture all our diarists and foster fresh voices, to be as prepared as possible to meet this challenge head on. I know that Pakalolo and Meteor Blades get decent numbers, but these hover in the 300s, which is average for the site overall, and sub-par in the blinding glare of environmental collapse. I’ve seen Pakalolo get as many as nearly a thousand recs…but this is rare. Why? An emergency is not the same as the buffet table at a social gathering. Reading and supporting diaries, are the least the Climate ‘concerned’ can do to help, but it is still being done at leisure with no sense of urgency. Cherry picking the most popular diarists and ignoring the rest, is short sited and self serving. Certainly it is more taxing and time consuming to ‘wander afield’, but making the assumption that by reading M.B, Pakalolo and occasionally Mark, you’re adequately informed and well prepared is simply a convenience and avoidance. Since 2016, I’ve been assiduously reading every Climate post on DK and have benefited many times from information provided by ‘lesser’ diarists. A hundred writers couldn’t adequately cover a topic this multifarious, complex and far reaching. Meteor Blades, does his best, but he is one person (albeit, a veritable climate ‘Library of Alexandria’). There is enough variety that some of us specialize, in critical areas nearly untouched by the rest. The majority of climate diarists get considerably less traction, although their efforts are in no way inferior. All of these dedicated individuals have value and need our support. We need to start working together as a team now, if we are ever to jump-start Daily Kos into taking political environmental action of any kind, let alone on the level that has long been called for. A couple of months ago, I wrote a diary promoting birches’ splendid ‘Climate Strike’ series on DK. It had an immediate effect on his numbers (even garnering more recs than my diary) but that has rapidly fallen off, despite the fact that he is regularly recd’ by Pakalolo, Peter Orlant, Meteor Blades, jfromga, Garden Toad, boatsie and myself, with many of us leaving comments. This series is a treasure trove of climate information and ideas, brilliantly thought out and beautifully written with access enhancing clarity. Although written several years ago and directed at the environmental concerns of the Bay Area, the majority of the information applies globally, while sadly remaining topical. With nearly every daily posting, birches’ uses comments to update the diary, adding to its relevancy. He does this conscientiously, despite getting a paucity of readership response. Each post covers a different aspect of our environmental emergency as it impacts San Francisco at large. He speaks about various kinds of environmental degradation, calls out climate negligence, addresses government policies (mostly bad), suggests legislation that would help reverse the damage being suffered and proposes smart realistic solutions of all kinds. As a bonus, Gardening Toad always provides a comprehensive list providing further facts and ideas for encouraging immediate individual action. This is well worth repeating from my previous diary calling attention to his efforts: “A common refrain in climate comments is: “what can I do about it” and it it would seem this cannot be addressed often enough. Ironically, birches’ posts are feeding us a cornucopia of pro-active ‘grist for the mill’, but it’s not being received. birches has proven himself to be a highly proactive and supportive team player in the DK climate community, as he consistently and untiringly leaves recs, as well as informed perceptive comments which help foster and support constructive dialogue for many other climate diaries. He does this nearly every day, while at the same time shepherding comments to his daily posts.” He is a critically needed asset to Daily Kos, but is himself being neglected by our community at large. His efforts are sorely in need of a very deserved level of appreciation and support. Once again, I urge you to take advantage of his largesse and recommend that you get into the habit of checking his post daily. Even if you are short of time, take a moment to rec the article which will help raise his profile and whenever possible, leave a comment. Find the time to do this as well for as many other climate diaries as you can, even if it means you have to forgo reading ‘en minutiae’ about the Traitor’s latest ‘Coup de Jour”.
