[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-17 Politics and religion are interwoven with each other. Many people’s ideologies are influenced by their religious beliefs. These beliefs can shape their views on topics like abortion, LGBTQ+ rights and social justice. People often draw upon their religious beliefs when they are forming their ethical and moral stances on political issues. People tend to align with political parties that reflect their religious or cultural values. People who are readers of political websites like Daily Kos often encounter diverse viewpoints and arguments. Exposure to differing opinions can challenge pre-existing beliefs and encourage individuals to reevaluate their positions. One of the commenters on my first diary pointed out that Daily Kos was a politics website...not a “yay atheists” site. ”This is a politics website. Not a “yay atheists” site. This is not the audience you’re looking for.” Fair points... Daily Kos is a politics website, not a “yay atheists” site, I appreciate when people provide their perspectives, in a constructive way. Perspectives are like respect, two way streets. One person’s perspective is not another person’s perspective, we all have our own perspectives, we have all come to our own perspectives. But are our perspectives correct? We should respect each other's perspective, I respect the commentor’s perspective. But I do not hold the same perspective, I have not come to the same conclusion about the Daily Kos audience. We should all try to see different people’s perspectives, our perspective is not the only way to see things. How do we know our perspectives are the correct perspectives? We don’t. My perspective is that the audience of Daily Kos readers has a few Atheists in it, and they would not mind reading a “yay atheists” article. Atheists are often readers of political websites like the Daily Kos. People who are avid readers of political websites like the Daily Kos, are exposed to diverse political beliefs and perspectives. In those audiences will be an Atheist or two or three. Perhaps the person that left that comment did not perceive themselves as an Atheist, but instead as a critical thinker, with diverse political perspectives? Perhaps…but doesn’t a “yay atheist” article get your critical reading skills all fired up and isn’t that why you read the Daily Kos because you are a critical thinker? This is my perspective…. A critical reader can become a critical thinker, a critical thinker can become a critical believer. A critical believer can become a critical non-believer, a critical non-believer can become an Atheist. Critical readers question, evaluate, and seek a deeper understanding of the material they encounter. Critical thinkers extend their analytical abilities to various aspects of life, not limited to written text. They apply logic, reason, and open-mindedness to assess complex issues and viewpoints. Critical believers approach their beliefs with the same critical and reflective mindset. Critical non-believers, after critical examination of their beliefs, may move away from previously held convictions. They may become critical non-believers, which can include agnostics, skeptics, or individuals who question specific beliefs they once held. For some, the critical examination of religious or supernatural beliefs can lead to atheism, which is the absence of belief in gods or deities. Atheists typically arrive at this position through a process of inquiry, skepticism, and a lack of persuasive evidence for the existence of gods. People that are avid readers of politics are thinking critically about their beliefs. When someone critically thinks and questions their own beliefs and perspectives they often realize that they are no longer their beliefs. The process of questioning one's beliefs can be a transformative experience. It can lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself and the world. It can lead someone to discover they are an Atheist, who needs to read a “yay atheists” article or two. That is my perspective of the Daily Kos audience. What is your perspective of the Daily Kos audience? Let me know in the comments...thanks.
