Kitchen Table Kibitzing 9/19/2023: Some Songs [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-19 Edward Hopper: Railroad Sunset (1929) Good evening, Kibitzers! Well, we’ve seen Hurricane Lee safely off with much less trouble than we might have had, and Hurricane Nigel is expected to make a sharp right while still well to the east of Bermuda and head in the general direction of the Faroe Islands. So now, we’re just staring down a couple of blobs on the hurricane map. There’s a red one just west of Africa, that has a 70% chance of doing something in the next week, and then, there’s a yellow one sitting right on the Carolina coast; it has a lower chance of doing something tropical, but is likely to be a bunch of rain that gets to the northeast by the weekend. We already had pouring rain here all day Monday, but I think that was separate from anything with a name or potential name. Hold up! This is a (possibly) public service announcement: If you have been longing to join @Jack’s Xwitter replacement Bluesky , but don’t know anyone to give you an invitation, see David Michigan’s comment this morning on how to get your own damn invitation. Anyway, today we have an assortment of music I’ve been tossing into my basket for a while. (My “liked” list on YouTube is a terrible mess.) Eva Cassidy: Stormy Monday (“Restored footage” of live performance at the Blues Alley jazz club, January 3, 1996.) Since it’s been a stormy Monday... [5:52] German musician and tapdancer Michael Fischer has a YouTube channel called Astaire la Vista, which includes this clever video of him both tapdancing to and playing Bach’s Invention No. 8 in F Major. [2:07] Diana Krall: California Dreamin’ (Live performance on Le Grand Studio RTL, a program on popular French radio network RTL, March 2015.) [3:35] Leslie Odom Jr.: Autumn Leaves (On Tony Bennett Celebrates 90, a 2016 NBC TV special honoring Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday.) With Michael O. Mitchell on piano. [3:09] Steve Winwood: The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys (Wincraft Studios, his recording studio in the Cotswolds; December 2022). According to the YouTube page, Winwood recorded this solo version to mark the release of the Low Spark album in the extended surround-sound technology Dolby ATMOS. [7:14] “The World's Most Famous Unknown Band”, an all-star ensemble presented by Chet Atkins, offers a short salute to Nashville music-industry personality Ralph Emery, on 1990 TV special An All Star Salute to Country Music. Personnel: Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, & Steve Wariner (guitar); Roy Clark (mandolin), Ray Stevens (piano), Ricky Skaggs (fiddle), Lee Greenwood (saxophone), Steve Gatlin (bass), Barbara Mandrell (steel guitar), and Irlene Mandrell (drums). [2:37] Emma Stevens: Blackbird (Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, 2019). From the YouTube page: The International Year of Indigenous Languages is a United Nations observance in 2019 that aims to raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the world, with an aim to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation. To bring awareness to this important cause students at Allison Bernard Memorial High School in Eskasoni, Cape Breton recorded Paul McCartney's Blackbird in their native Mi'kmaq language. Mi'kmaq lyrics and phonetic rendering appear on the YT page. [2:36] Dave Matthews with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band: Heart of Gold (From the Big Apple to the Big Easy: Concert for New Orleans, Madison Square Garden, NYC, Sept. 20, 2005). [4:30] José Feliciano: Malagueña (Live performance, Stamford CT, 1997). [4:48] Billy Joel with Tony Bennett: New York State of Mind (Live performance at Shea Stadium, Queens NY, 2008). [7:02] Brandi Carlile: Hello In There (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Apr 9, 2020). Way back at the beginning of Covid, although we didn’t know how near the beginning it was, John Prine was one of the disease’s early victims. Colbert was doing his show remotely, and invited Carlile to perform this tribute from her home. Introduced by Colbert with some reminiscences. [6:45] J.J. Cale: Durango (1975 recording, not released until the 1997 anthology album Anyway The Wind Blows: The Anthology.) The YouTube poster characterizes this instrumental as “a trippy jam by one of the greatest musicians ever”. It is, and I also liked the (unattributed) photos, which I take to be Durango-area scenery, but I’m sure we can get fact-checking on that right here in KTK. [5:30] David Lindley, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby: Mercury Blues (Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, September 1999). What a lineup! Of course it’s awesome.
